Harmony for Harps - KWC Traditional Irish Music Programme

Celebrating Tradition and Community: Our Irish Harp Tuition Programme

At Kilcooley Women’s Centre, we believe in the power of music to bring people together, heal, and inspire. That’s why we’re proud to share the success of our Traditional Irish Music Tuition Programme, where a group of women from all sections of our community are learning to play the beautiful and iconic Irish harp.

This unique programme is more than just a music class—it’s a celebration of culture, connection, and personal growth. Our participants, all of whom are complete novices, come from diverse backgrounds, united by their curiosity and passion for learning. Together, they are discovering the magic of the harp, an instrument deeply rooted in Irish heritage and tradition.

Under the guidance of our skilled tutor Mary, the women are not only mastering the basics of harp playing but also immersing themselves in the rich history and stories behind traditional Irish music. From learning classic tunes to understanding the significance of the harp in Irish culture, the programme offers a holistic experience that nurtures both skill and soul.

For many of the participants, this journey has been transformative. The harp, with its soothing tones and intricate melodies, has become a source of relaxation, creativity, and confidence. It’s a space where women can express themselves, challenge themselves, and support one another in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

But the impact of this programme goes beyond the music. It’s about building bridges across our community, nurturing friendships, and creating a sense of belonging. Whether it’s sharing a laugh during practice, celebrating small milestones, or performing together at community events, these women are proof that music has the power to unite and uplift.

We are incredibly proud of the progress our harp group has made and the joy they’ve found in this shared experience. Their dedication and enthusiasm are a testament to the resilience and spirit of the women in our community.

They are preparing for their first public performance at our St Patricks Day event

If you’ve ever dreamed of learning an instrument or exploring your cultural heritage, we invite you to join us. Whether you’re a beginner or simply curious, there’s a place for you in our Trad music programmes. Together, let’s keep the tradition of Irish music alive and create new melodies that reflect the strength and diversity of our community.

Stay tuned for updates on our harp group’s journey and upcoming performances. Who knows? You might just be inspired to pick up a harp and join in!
