A Day of Unity, Flavour, and Celebration: Kilcooley Women’s Centre Hosts Historic Eid al Fitr Gathering
Date: March 21, 2026
By: The Kilcooley Women’s Centre Good Relations & Peace Plus Team
On Saturday afternoon the historic Old Market House in Bangor was filled with the sound of traditional music, and the irresistible aroma of spices and sweet treats. It was an afternoon to remember as we came together to celebrate Eid al Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan for our local Muslim families.
Kilcooley Women’s Centre (KWC) were delighted to host this special community event on March 21, 2026. But while we provided the meeting space, this event was a true testament to what happens when the entire community pulls together and we eat, celebrate and come together.
A Collaborative Feast
The heart of any Eid celebration is the breaking of the fast—and thanks to incredible local hospitality businesses, guests and members of the public who stopped by were treated to an amazing culinary journey. The food was the star of the show, featuring a stunning array of traditional dishes that showcased the rich culinary talent we have right here in the Borough. From savory delights to decadent desserts, the meal was a perfect representation of the generosity and warmth that defines this holy period.
We extend our gratitude to those local businesses who coordinated and cooked for the whole event to ensure no one left the table hungry.
Strength in Partnership
This event was about more than just a meal; it was about building bridges. We were delighted to host this celebration with the support of key organisations who share our vision for a cohesive and supportive community.
A huge thank you to:
Ards North Down Borough PSNI and the Police & Community Safety Partnership: For joining us in celebration and strengthening the bond between the community and local policing.
Ards and North Down Borough Council: For their ongoing commitment to supporting inclusive events.
The Peace Plus Partnership: For their vital support in our activity that promote peace and reconciliation across Northern Ireland.
Bangor Chamber of Commerce: For championing local businesses and helping us connect with the wonderful hospitality partners who made the feast possible.
Their collective support proves that when public bodies, local government, and community sector and social enterprise work together, we can create truly meaningful experiences.
Fun, Culture, and Connection
While the adults enjoyed the delicious food and conversations, the children were immersed in the festivities. We had a fantastic lineup of activities for the younger attendees, including creative crafts for the children that kept little hands busy.
The atmosphere was vibrant with the intricate designs of henna hand tattoos, a tradition that had guests of all ages lining up for their turn. Adding to the festive spirit, the room was alive with the rhythm of traditional music and dance courtesy of the team at Artxtra, reminding everyone of the rich cultural heritage we were celebrating.
Building Community Relations
Events like these are so important. They allow us to share our traditions, learn about each other, and break bread together. For many, Eid is a time for family, forgiveness, and community. We are incredibly proud that Kilcooley Women’s Centre could serve as the hub for such an important occasion, bringing together people from all backgrounds to celebrate the end of Ramadan.
We would like to thank everyone who attended, the volunteers who helped set up, and our partners who made this event possible. We are already looking forward to next year!
Eid Mubarak to all who celebrated!
