KWC Acquires 357 Old Belfast Road Bangor for Early Years Programmes

We’re delighted to announce that Kilcooley Women’s Centre has successfully secured ownership of the Ladybirds Children and Family Centre, located on the Old Belfast Road in Bangor, through the UK Government’s Community Ownership Fund.
This achievement marks a significant milestone, safeguarding the future of a much-loved community facility and ensuring its long-term stability, ending years of challenges where the staff, volunteers, children and parents faced uncertainty due to not owning their own premises. Over the past 30 years, the organisation has had to move at short notice due to landlords deciding to repurpose premises, essential works which resulted in us having to relocate.
The Ladybirds Centre has been a cornerstone of support for children and families in the local area for 30 years. However, uncertainty loomed as the building was at risk of being sold by the previous owner, who was considering changing the site to housing. Thanks to the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DHLUC) and their new flagship Community Ownership Programme, we were able to step in and take action to secure this vital resource for our community.
Ownership of the building means we can now plan for the future with confidence, ensuring families continue to have access to affordable, high-quality early years programmes and a range of family support services. It also provides our staff with a renewed sense of stability and belonging, allowing them to focus on delivering exceptional care and innovative programmes, without the worry of either having to move again, or face closure.
This acquisition represents more than just a change in ownership. It is a victory for the local community, demonstrating the power of collaboration, resilience, and investment in grassroots initiatives. The Community Ownership Fund provided us with a unique opportunity, as we had tried previously to secure support. We are determined to build upon this funding success, developing the Ladybirds Centre into an even greater hub of opportunity and connection for children, families, and the wider community.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Department of Levelling Up and the Community Ownership Fund team at the Department for making this possible through this innovative funding stream. Together, we’ve not only preserved a building but also a space where futures are shaped, and lives are changed. This is a triumph for Bangor and a testament to the impact of community-led action.
